Medicare Supplement Plans

A Medicare Supplement fills the gaps that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) leaves behind. Medicare pays 80% of approved medical costs, and the Supplement covers the remaining 20%. These plans—often called Medigap—are labeled by letters. Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N are the most common and the ones you’ll see advertised most often.

The differences between these plans are straightforward, but many seniors forget why they chose a particular one. The key point is simple: Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N all cover the full 20% that Medicare doesn’t pay. No matter which one you choose, you’re protected during a major health event.

Most people compare these plans by looking at what they may owe beyond the monthly premium.

What each plan includes

Plan F

  • No out-of-pocket costs beyond the monthly premium.
  • Only available to those who started Medicare before 2020.

Plan G

  • You pay the Part B deductible once per calendar year (currently $283 in 2026).

Plan N

  • You pay the Part B deductible, small doctor copays (up to $20), a $50 ER copay (waived if admitted), and possible excess charges. These charges are uncommon but can occur.

All Medicare Supplement plans work anywhere Medicare is accepted, no matter which insurance company you choose—Cigna, Aetna, Mutual of Omaha, and others all follow the same standardized benefits. You don’t need referrals, and you don’t deal with prior authorization.

People often ask if I have a favorite plan, and honestly, I don’t. Seniors with Supplements tend to be very satisfied.

  • Plan N fits well for those in good health.
  • Plan G appeals to people who want to avoid copays.
  • Plan F is great for those who prefer not to deal with any bills at all.

Each plan has its place.

Premiums do increase over time, which is usually the only complaint I hear from policyholders.

If you’re in good health, we can often help you lower your premium at any point during the year. We’re always glad to review your situation and explore your options.
